01 · what is at home

Everything at home works from the sofa.

Files on the NAS. The cameras. The printer. The lamp by the sofa. The sensor that decides when the air conditioner runs. The router's own settings page. The desktop upstairs. The TV, and everything that only plays at home. From the sofa, all of it.

From a hotel, a train, your parents' kitchen · none of it. The devices are on, the network is up, and you cannot get to them. From anywhere else, your home network does not exist.

02 · why it exists

Your house used to have an address.

Every home connection used to get its own public address. You could reach your house from outside the same way you reach any website.

Then the internet ran out of addresses. Most ISPs now share one public address between hundreds of homes · the trade calls it carrier-grade NAT, CGNAT. From the outside, your house is one of hundreds behind a door with no number on it.

Your house can still call out. That is why the internet works from the sofa. But nobody can call in, because there is nothing to call.

Port forwarding and dynamic DNS were the old tricks for reaching home. Both need an address that is yours. You no longer have one, and nothing in your router's settings brings it back.

03 · the thing people buy instead

So people buy a VPN. It solves a different problem.

A VPN subscription sends your traffic to a company's computer somewhere else. Websites see that company's address instead of yours. That is what it does, and for some things it is useful.

It was never built to bring you home. Your NAS is not on their server. Your cameras are not in their data centre. The destination is theirs, so it never stops billing.

The word is the same because the tunnel technology is the same. The shape is the opposite. A VPN sends you somewhere else. vploq brings you home.

04 · what only works from home

More and more only works from your own house.

More services now check where you are, not who you are. Streaming apps look for the home the subscription lives in and challenge a device they have never seen there. The recorder, the media server, the NAS only answer on the home network. Your bank's app, the heat-pump app, a work tool: they trust a connection they already know.

A VPN makes this worse. Its address belongs to a data centre, and a data-centre address is exactly what these services turn away.

With vploq your traffic leaves through your own home line, so every service sees your home address, the same one it saw last weekend. Nothing in the house has to be opened for this. Only the address your traffic leaves from changes. Your household, from wherever you are.

It is your house, reached from elsewhere. What only works from home keeps working, for the people who live there, and for nobody else.

05 · how it works

vploq dials out.

vploq sits on your router at home. It does not wait for anyone to knock. It opens an outbound, encrypted connection · the same direction your browser goes when it loads a page.

Outbound always works. It works behind CGNAT. It works behind a hotel firewall. It works behind an IT department that will not open a port. Nothing is opened on your router. Nothing listens. There is nothing to knock on.

Once that outbound call is up, it carries traffic in both directions. That is the whole trick, and it is why vploq has to be a thing in your house: something at home has to make the call.

Inbound is dead and stays dead. Outbound is the direction your network already allows, so that is the direction vploq uses.

06 · where you arrive

Your phone connects to your vploq. Not to a server.

The other end of the tunnel is your own house. Your phone talks to your vploq, and your vploq is on your network, so your devices are simply there · the NAS at its usual address, the camera, the printer, the router's settings page.

When you open a website, the request leaves through your home connection. The site sees your house, not the hotel and not a rented server. Someone watching the hotel wifi sees one encrypted stream going to one place, and nothing inside it.

Nothing is uploaded to make this work. The keys that encrypt the tunnel are generated on vploq and on your phone, and never leave them.

One thing to know before you rely on it. Whatever you pull from home · a file from the NAS, a camera stream, a website loaded through home · travels up your home connection first. Your home upload speed is the ceiling. Most home lines upload far slower than they download; a 20 Mbit/s upload means about 20 Mbit/s to your phone. vploq itself carries up to 300 Mbit/s, so on a fast line it is not the limit. 07 · the honest part

When the two ends cannot meet directly.

Most of the time the phone and vploq find each other and talk directly. Some networks will not allow it · certain mobile carriers, some corporate firewalls. They let traffic out but will not let two outsiders meet.

Then an encrypted relay forwards the packets between the two ends. The relay carries ciphertext. It cannot read what passes through, because the keys were generated on your vploq and your phone and never left them. It moves packets; it never sees inside them.

So it would be wrong to tell you that nothing ever passes through vploq. Sometimes it does. What passes through is sealed at your phone and opened at your vploq, and nothing in between has the key.
